Have you ever noticed how certain foods cause you to naturally fall off to sleep?  Some people think that these are the types of foods needed to get a good night’s sleep. That may be true but, you might be having difficulty sleeping because of a chemical reaction that is taking place in your body.

Whenever you eat foods that are high on the glycemic index, they release large amounts of sugar into your bloodstream. Your body reacts by releasing a large amount of insulin. The insulin is what makes you feel tired and lethargic, allowing you to fall asleep, not the food. This is bad for your body for a couple of reasons, first because the sleep you get is not sound sleep. Second, it can quickly cause you to gain weight which can also affect your sleep. If you would like to eat so that you can beat insomnia, there are some foods that act as natural cures for insomnia.

The first thing that you should make sure that you are eating is plenty of raw vegetables during the day, especially greens. An easy way to do this is to drink a green smoothie every day. It might sound a little bit disgusting but it is delicious and extremely nutritious. Mix a large handful of greens together with two pieces of fruit, water and some ice. Blend it until it is smooth and enjoy.

Secondly you should make sure that you’re getting monounsaturated fats on a daily basis. Some people don’t eat any type of fat but depriving yourself of the right kind of fats is not going to help you lose weight and is bad for your health. These fats are found in avocados, peanut butter, and many nuts and seeds. This will help to even out your blood sugar through the day and to make you more relaxed in the evenings.

Finally, remember what you grandmother said and try drinking some warm milk before bedtime. Warm milk contains tryptophan which triggers your body release of the natural sleep hormone, melatonin which is one of the best natural cures for insomnia. You see, your grandmother knew what she was talking about all along.

So there you have it, 3 foods that can help you beat insomnia. Make them a part of your regular diet and soon your difficulty sleeping will be a thing of the past.
