Although nearly everyone has trouble falling or staying asleep once in a while, once it begins to occur on a regular basis it can really affect your life. This is when your sleeping problems become a sleeping disorder.

Because there are so many causes of sleeping disorders, one of the challenges of treating deep seated sleeping problems is figuring out what the cause is. Because we live in such a fast paced society, many people ignore their symptoms and fail to treat their insomnia as anything serious. In some cases, you may tell yourself to just “get more sleep,” but as anyone who has experienced ongoing sleeping problems will tell you, this is often easier said than done.

To successfully treat sleeping disorders you need to take steps to recognize what is causing you to have difficulty sleeping in the first place. Once you have figured this out you can make a concerted effort to fix what is causing your insomnia. If you don’t take action the only thing that will pass is time, while you become more and more exhausted. Then you may be tempted to turn to drugs or other quick fixes to help you sleep, which can cause problems of their own.

In this article we’re going to examine the most common sleep disorders. This will help you to identify what is causing your sleeping problems so you can make a plan to deal with it.

Insomnia: Of all the causes of sleeping disorders, insomnia is probably the best known. Insomnia is defined by experiencing sleepless nights. You may have difficulty falling to sleep and/or staying asleep and as a result, you often wake up feeling tired. A common warning sign is constant fatigue. This can lead to irritability, drowsiness, and daytime sleepiness.

Sleep Apnea: Though there are three types of sleep apnea, the most common is “obstructive sleep apnea,” which occurs when enough air isn’t able to get through your mouth and or nose and into your lungs. As a result, your breathing will grow shallow and in some cases, cease completely – at least for a few seconds. This tells your body to re-trigger the breathing process, so you may snort, cough, or snore.

You’ll resume sleeping, but since it’s been interrupted your quality of sleep has been compromised and you’ll begin seeing signs of sleep deprivation. Something to note is that not everyone who snores suffers from sleep apnea.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS): If you suffer from RLS, you’re literally unable to rest your legs, just as the name implies. For a number of reasons – including a burning, crawling, or tingling sensation – you may feel the need to attend to your legs. By moving them, the sensation is addressed, but the result is a restless sleep.

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD): Similar to RLS, if you have PLMD, then you move often during sleep. However, unlike RLS, the movement is involuntary. The limbs move periodically in twitches or jerks. This usually takes place in the legs, but for some, the arms are also affected. These movements – though you may be unaware of them – lead to a restless sleep. Upon waking up, the deprivation is made apparent through the moodiness, fatigue, or drowsiness that you feel.

Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS): If you’re suffering from DSPS, it seems as if your circadian rhythm (your internal 24-hour cycle) is off by half a day and you’re unable to sleep during nighttime hours. As a result, you need to sleep during the day, which can seriously interfere with your lifestyle – from work to quality time spent with the family.

Narcolepsy: A dangerous disorder defined by excessive sleepiness during the daytime, as well as periods when the body’s muscles are weakened into a state of cataplexy. You’re at risk when you’re doing everyday tasks, like driving a car from Point A to Point B, since a narcoleptic attack could occur at any time.

In addition to these sleeping disorders, there are also others – such as snoring, seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.), night terrors, and sleepwalking. All of them can lead to sleep deprivation and each is sure to have a physical, mental, or emotional impact on your life.

If you are having sleeping problems you need to find out if you are being affected by a sleeping disorder. If one of these sleeping disorders is present, after you identify it you need to address the cause of you having difficulty sleeping quickly. You may find that you, like most people, need to try a few different methods to find a solution that works best for you.

You don’t have to continue to suffer with any of these sleeping disorders. If you are experiencing sleeping problems consult your physician or a sleep specialist. With their help you can overcome your difficulty sleeping and begin leading an energy filled life again!

Studies show that less than one in four adults regularly gets a good night’s sleep. For most people having difficulty sleeping is the norm. Stress, long work hours, shift work, excessive worry and just too much to do can cause trouble both falling and staying asleep. For some people it can last a day or two. For others their difficulty sleeping lasts for a month. For the really unfortunate insomnia can last for months on end and turn into a sleeping disorder. No matter how you experienced insomnia, it can diminish your quality of life.

Most people usually don’t take any notice when they first begin to experience having difficulty sleeping. After all, we all have problems sleeping every once in a while. But as the lack of sleep increases its effects begin to take a greater and greater affect on your everyday life.

Insomnia can cause overreactions to small incidents and the stresses of everyday life. Your difficulty sleeping can make you think fuzzy and cause memory loss. If you are having problems falling or staying asleep it can trigger problems at work or school. It can also slow down your reaction time. As you reaction time slows down it increases the probability of you having an automobile, home, or workplace accident. Severe or chronic insomnia can affect a person’s life as much as chronic conditions such as heart failure.

According to the experts there are three types of insomnia. They are classified according to the duration of your insomnia incidents. The first is known as transient insomnia. This is when you have difficulty sleeping for a period of less than four weeks. For most people, this type of insomnia is a result of excitement or stress. An important business meeting, an argument, a new relationship or a new school year can result in transient insomnia. Some people experience this type of insomnia when passing from one time zone to another. This is a result of disrupting the circadian rhythms and is known as jet lag. Also over stimulation from exercise or illness can cause a person to lose sleep for short periods of time.

The second type of insomnia is known as short-term insomnia. This is when you aren’t able to sleep well for a period of more than four weeks and up to six months. This type of difficulty sleeping can be a result of having excessive stress at work, getting laid off, changing jobs, the death of a close friend or relative, physical and mental illnesses as well as other ongoing factors. In most cases the cause of your short term insomnia either resolves itself or you adjust to the problem and begins to sleep soundly again.

The final type of insomnia is known as long term or chronic insomnia. This is when a person isn’t able to sleep well for a period of more than six months. Studies have shown that over 20 million Americans complain of this type of chronic sleeplessness. Chronic insomnia may be caused by excessive worrying, physical and mental illness, sleep disorders, or, according to a nationwide study by the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers, physical ailments such as disorders of breathing such as Sleep Apnea which is caused by a blockage to the airway. Sleeping or abnormal muscle activity such as Restless leg Syndrome is another cause of chronic insomnia (RLS). It is experienced by uncomfortable sensations in the legs that cause a person an uncontrollable urge to move their legs. If you are experiencing the symptoms of either sleep apnea or RLS it’s importunate to seek help because these can be devastating to your health.

There you have it, the three types of insomnia. The good news is there are lots of cures for insomnia out there. If you are having trouble falling or staying asleep it’s important to figure out what’s causing your difficulty sleeping because, no matter what causes it, chronic insomnia will negatively effect your life. Left untreated it could even kill you.

Some people drink alcohol to help them sleep better at night. Some drink a glass of wine, others drink a mixed drink or perhaps even a shot or two of bourbon. While this may put you into an unconscious state rather easily, this may be causing you trouble staying asleep. Why is that the case?

First, that lack of alcohols is not what causes insomnia. The cure for insomnia involves finding out what causes your insomnia and treat it from there. Drinking alcohol before bedtime to help you sleep simply takes away the symptoms of the Insomnia but doesn’t treat the underlying problem. It actually makes the problem worse because you’re putting yourself into a never-ending cycle of needing this alcohol before you go to bed. Unfortunately, it is not doing the job that you are hoping for.

While alcohol may help you to fall asleep quickly, it only affects the first half of your sleep. We have sleep cycle stages. Although you may fall asleep because of the alcohol, you are disrupting the other sleep cycles stages. In fact, studies have found that alcohol which has been consumed within six hours of going to sleep can affect the amount of good sleep that you are getting negatively. You may be unconscious when you fall asleep, you are not getting the deep sleep that you need in order to wake rejuvenated.

Alcohol can also cause breathing problems. You may have been told or noticed that you tend to snore more whenever you drink alcohol. This is actually because the alcohol is causing a problem with your breathing and that can negatively affect your sleep as well.

If you really want to cure your Insomnia naturally, stay away from alcohol before bed time. You might take some herbal remedies for insomnia, such as melatonin supplements. This can help you asleep and get more restful sleep.

So if you are having trouble falling asleep use something else besides alcohol to help you sleep. Find out what causes your insomnia and treat the cause. That is really the cure for insomnia you’re looking for.

There is a little gland in the area of your neck that controls so much of your body that it has often been called the rudder which steers it. It is the thyroid gland. When you’re not having any problems with it, you don’t even realize that it is there. The fact of the matter is, if you are having a difficult time with your thyroid gland, it can cause a number of different problems and can one of the reasons for your insomnia. If you are having difficulty sleeping, you might want to take a look at the possibility that your thyroid is to blame.

There are several different things that can go wrong with the thyroid gland, all of which lead to sleeping disorders. Hypothyroidism is whenever the thyroid gland is operating slowly. This causes problems such as weight gain, a general sense of uneasiness and a reason for insomnia. Hyperthyroidism is exactly the opposite because it is when our thyroid is running at top speed. This can cause weight loss and also can cause trouble falling or staying asleep. Hashimoto’s disease is not really a problem with the thyroid but it is tumors that grow on the thyroid gland, restricting its proper functioning. It is also one of the reasons for insomnia associated with the thyroid.

If your difficulty sleeping is related to your thyroid, in order for you to beat insomnia, you really need to get your thyroid working correctly again. Your doctor is typically going to want to put you on some kind of a prescription, such as Synthroid which can get your thyroid numbers back into shape. Some people find that they can get them there through eating the proper diet and supplementing their diet with iodine. Although you still should seek out medical advice, regardless if you’re trying to do it naturally or not, many people have seen amazing results in changing their lifestyle.

Remember not all sleeping disorders are related to thyroid problems, but if yours is, make sure you follow your doctor’s advice. Once you get your thyroid back in working order, you’re body will start to regain its balance. As your body gets back into balance you’ll start feeling better again and sleeping better again and that’s what you want, isn’t it?

Would you be surprised that most of it has to do with your state of mind? What’s on you mind has a significantly affect on your sleep. Too much on your mind or an overactive imagination can cause you to have difficulty sleeping. Staying awake working or watching T.V. at night can compound these problems and can over stimulate your already overactive mind. Simply learning to relax and let go of the day’s events can help you sleep better.

Let’s look at what causes insomnia.

1. Stress - Stress induced insomnia is probably the number one reason that people have difficulty sleeping. Concerns about work, school, health or family can keep your mind too active, giving you trouble falling asleep. Excessive boredom, such as after retirement or during a long illness, may occur and also can create stress and give you trouble falling asleep.

2. Anxiety – Many people today suffer from anxiety. Small, everyday anxieties as well as severe anxiety disorders may keep your mind too alert to fall asleep.

3. Depression – Many studies have linked sleep and depression. If you are depressed you may either sleep too much or have difficultly sleeping. This may be due to chemical imbalances in your brain or because worries that accompany depression may keep you from relaxing enough to fall asleep.

4. Stimulants – Stimulants can come from many different places. Prescription drugs, including some antidepressants, high blood pressure and corticosteroid medications, can cause your trouble falling or staying asleep. Many over-the-counter (OTC) medications, including some pain medication combinations, decongestants and weight-loss products, contain caffeine and other stimulants. Antihistamines may initially make you groggy, but they can make urinary problems worse, causing you to get up more during the night.

5. A change in your environment or work schedule - Travel or working the late or early shift can disrupt your body’s circadian rhythms. Your circadian rhythms act as internal clocks, guiding such things as your wake-sleep cycle, metabolism and body temperature. Circadian rhythms are what help you sleep so disturbing them can make it difficult to fall or stay asleep.

6. Long-term use of sleep medications – In addition to being addictive, used over time, sleep medications can lead to sleeping disorders. This includes over the counter sleep medications. If you need sleep medications for longer than a few days, talk with your doctor, preferably one who specializes in sleeping disorders.

7. Medical conditions that cause pain – Pain can keep nearly anyone awake. Pain from arthritis, fibromyalgiaand neuropathies, among other conditions can give anyone difficulty sleeping. Make sure that your medical conditions are well treated as this will definitely help you with your insomnia.

8. Behavioral insomnia – Not keeping a regular sleep pattern can result in behavioral insomnia, especially in children. Behavioral insomnia may also occur when you worry excessively about not being able to sleep well and try too hard to fall asleep. This can spiral into a vicious cycle of having difficulty sleeping. Most people with this condition sleep better when they’re away from their usual sleep environment or when they don’t try to sleep, such as when they’re watching TV or reading.

9. Eating too much too late in the evening – Although you may feel tired as a result of all your blood flowing to your stomach after eating a huge meal, eating too much is one of the biggest preventable reasons for having difficulty sleeping. While having a light snack before bedtime is OK, eating too much may cause you to feel physically uncomfortable while lying down, making it difficult to get to sleep. You may experience heartburn, a backflow of acid and food from the stomach to the esophagus after eating. Any of these cause you trouble falling or staying asleep.

10. Aging – Having difficulty sleeping becomes more prevalent with age. As you get older, changes can occur that may affect your sleep.

While this list isn’t all inclusive it does give you a place to start to determine what is giving you difficulty sleeping. Once you find out what it is you may be able to overcome your insomnia and start sleeping again!

I used to. Some of my problem was due to anxiety. There is a great deal of research that has been done about the relationship between insomnia and anxiety. If you are having trouble sleeping your lack of sleep may be anxiety related too.

According to experts, insomnia can usually be classified into four levels. These are 1) difficulty in falling asleep, 2) difficulties with staying asleep, 3) waking up earlier than planned and 4) sleep state misperception. If you are having difficulty sleeping it would be a good idea to see which of these categories you fall in to.

A bigger question is how much sleep so you need to stay alert during the day? Scientists tell us that, on average humans require eight hours of sleep per night but individual studies have shown that needs vary from person to person. There are a number of easy to recognize signs that are used to show healthy sleep.

The first is that a good night sleep comes easily without resorting to drugs. Second, if you do wake up in the middle of the night you can quickly fall back to sleep. Third, waking up occurs naturally each time and at the same time even without an alarm clock. Forth and finally, once you are up, you feel awake and alert all day.

An anxiety sleep disorder will usually result if one or more of the above requirements are not met. One of the biggest reasons for having difficulty sleeping is stress. One of the best stress relief tips you can use to overcome your trouble sleeping is to make the time before going to bed a pleasant period that is quiet and relaxed. This is especially true if you have a busy, trying day. Take an hour or so to do something enjoyable and sleep provoking before retiring for bed.

Sometimes, you may experience trouble sleeping that may last for a number of nights. Usually this is a result of a combination of stress and an environment which may heighten your stress levels. One cause that affects me is extreme temperature changes, especially when it gets uncomfortably warm. Some people have problems sleeping in cooler weather. Jet lag has also been linked to both insomnia and anxiety insomnia and can make it tough to sleep for many nights.

Another major cause of an anxiety sleep disorder is the feelings associated with depression. Depression is often accompanied with trouble sleeping.

All of these situations can become worse when the sufferer takes excessive caffeine, takes alcohol before bedtime, smokes before going to sleep, takes afternoon siestas or has an irregular sleep/wake pattern. In order to overcome your trouble sleeping you need to eliminate these factors.

One of the greatest effects of insomnia is when you wake up tired and are unable to function as you normally would. Your impaired concentration can result in impaired driving which, of course, can be dangerous. Insomnia may also result in impaired memory which can result in poor judgments or decisions. People who have long term insomnia also tend to be irritable and emotional as a result of sleep deprivation.

The facts are in. Insomnia and anxiety go hand in hand. Your trouble sleeping can affect everything and everyone around you. If you find that insomnia is affecting your quality of life it is advisable to talk to a physician or sleep specialist about the problem so that you can find a solution as soon as possible.

From the freeway to fast food, it seems like we’re all moving faster and faster. The speed of modern life causes almost every one of us to have more on our plate than can be accomplished in a 24-hour day. Instead of slowing down and taking time for ourselves, we try to offset the lack of available time with less relaxation, less sleep and very little exercise. Most people rationalize this behavior by telling themselves that the more they get accomplished the less worry and stress they’ll have. By checking off things on their ‘to do’ list they can feel more ‘successful’ and not have to feel guilty over tasks uncompleted. Of course they feel worn out, they are always fighting a cold, have a constant headache and are always grumpy, but they are getting things done.

I’m wondering if you can relate to this scenario. If you are like most people, you probably can. The problem with living like this is that it is one of the biggest reasons for stress insomnia, which can cycle out of control. Let’s examine the common reasons for insomnia as well as some insomnia treatment ideas.

Your busy lifestyle might be giving you a busy mind syndrome. The ‘busy mind’ syndrome is characterized by worry and anxiety over situations or problems that your mind keeps revisiting, over and over. For example, you might be watching TV, but your mind keeps drifting back to work, financial problems, an issue with your relationship or just thinking about what you need to do tomorrow. Later, when you finally lie down and try to go to sleep, you find it impossible because your mind’s still spinning out of control. You may eventually dose off into a restless sleep, but wake up a few hours later, not even realizing what woke you. You may toss and turn for an hour or so before you can again fall asleep again. Then, when the alarm goes off, you wake up groggy, tired and fatigued.

Some people have trouble sleeping because they eat too much food late at night. If you are one of the people that have problems sleeping, you should eat a light meal in the evening.

Irregular sleeping patterns can also be a reason for having difficulty sleeping. If you have trouble sleeping, try to establish a regular ‘bedtime’, like many parents impose on their kids. This retrains your body to ‘expect’ sleep at a particular hour.

Studies have found that a lack of exercise is one of the biggest reasons for stress insomnia. As long as it’s not too close to your bedtime, take a brisk walk after dinner. This can relax you by expending nervous energy and make your body amenable to the idea of sleep.

You may have trouble sleeping if you have to work during the night. That’s because sunlight sends signals to your circadian clock, which tell you it’s time to be awake. Some people have found that using a sleep mask and window treatments that effectively block natural light can be a great help with insomnia.

Want a great natural chronic insomnia treatment? Drink a nice cup of hot chocolate before bedtime. By the way, this traditional comfort beverage has its basis in science. It’s well known that calcium helps relax muscles and nerves. As you muscles and nerves relax it signals your body that it’s time to relax and fall asleep.

Vitamin D helps regulate your circadian rhythms. If your typical day doesn’t involve much exposure to sunlight, you could be suffering from a deficiency of vitamin D. This is a big contributor to having difficulty sleeping. Ask your doctor to test your vitamin D levels. You may find that you need a supplement. Vitamin D3 is the form which your body interprets as natural sunlight.

You may not know it but biofeedback therapy has been found to be an effective chronic insomnia treatment. So has hypnotherapy.

Biofeedback techniques employ strategies that teach your body to respond to certain stimuli in a particular way. For example, if you play a tape of ocean sounds, the sounds tend to induce a state of relaxation. When used repetitively, your body begins to respond automatically to the sounds you hear.

Hypnotherapy uses relaxation techniques to calm your body and mind. Through this process you learn to control your mind in a way that allows you to relax and sleep. Many people have found that working with a qualified hypnotherapist is useful when they first begin using hypnosis for sleep. Then they can move on to self hypnosis.

Like I mentioned above, regular exercise helps you get to sleep. But for right now, try this trick. If you wake up at 2 am, tossing and turning don’t just lie there. That isn’t going to help at all and will only serve to increase your frustration. Instead of tossing and turning, get up and clean the tub. Go out to the garage and straighten it up. Clean the kitchen counters or tackle the oven. Put some elbow grease into these boring tasks. You may find that they’ll make you tired and help you get back in bed and get some sleep!

You don’t have to continue to have difficulty sleeping. Try out these natural techniques to help with insomnia and see which ones work for you. They’ll help you get a good night’s sleep and start living again!

The LSAT is unlike many other tests and is not a test of your accumulated knowledge, but a test of how your brain works. Can you make logical deductions? Can you unravel word problems, and keep your wits about you under the strain of a timed test?

My client found it intimidating, and as a result, she suffered from one of the biggest reasons that people have trouble sleeping, insomnia anxiety. She spent the week before the test taking practice tests. She aced most of them, and should have been relaxed and confident. Instead she found herself unsure and filled with self-doubt. She had difficulty sleeping regularly and couldn’t concentrate when she needed to most. She became so anxious that she completely psyched herself out and, on test day, she bombed miserably.

Her inability to still her mind and complete the task at hand was all because of her difficulty sleeping caused by insomnia anxiety. In order to attempt a difficult task you need to be rested and clear-headed. She was anything but. She had gone more than a week without ever sleeping more than a couple of hours a night and, as a result, was exhausted. The result was that she was unable to concentrate and as the test went on her anxiety kept building and building until she couldn’t solve anything. Her focus was on the repercussions of her failure to score well instead of successfully completing the test.

Everyone, to one degree or another, is susceptible to this type of situational pressure. It’s important to recognize that in order to rise above what are essentially self-inflicted wounds you need to have a strategy.

What’s important to realize is that insomnia anxiety and depression go hand-in-hand. They can soon become a vicious cycle. The more anxious you are, the less likely it is that you’ll be able to fall asleep. The less sleep you get, the less rested you’ll be in the morning and the less likely you are to perform well at work, in school, or just at life in general. This results in two kinds of anxiety, the psychological anxiety of potential failure, as well as the bio-chemical anxiety of simply not having gotten enough sleep.

Both of these can types of anxiety can lead to depression. The general drowsiness caused by the lack of sleep can lead to depression by itself. When combined with anxiety and self-doubt the process progresses much faster.

This means that it’s important to recognize the early signs of insomnia anxiety. If you feel you are being affected, discuss your symptoms with a mental health professional or your doctor. Together you can decide on the type of treatment necessary. You might find it could be as simple as changing your diet or exercise routine. In some cases it may require medication. No matter what, it’s important to get help with insomnia anxiety so you can get a good night’s sleep and work on your goals and dreams.

What are the effects of insomnia? When you have difficulty sleeping your body and mind suffer. Let’s take a look at what sleep actually does for you.

Scientists have found that sleep and its accompanying dreams allows you to organize your memories. It also can help you recover lost memories. Research shows that that after studying, when you “sleep on it” or get a good night’s sleep, it reinforces what you studied.

Sleep actually acts as a mood enhancer and helps to improve our social behavior. I don’t know about you, but one of the effects of insomnia for me is I get grumpy. Tired people are often cranky and easily frustrated. If you don’t think sleep helps, just check out a toddler that hasn’t had enough sleep.

Although it’s common for everyone to have difficulty sleeping every once in a while insomnia that lasts more than a few days can really affect us negatively. If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep on a regular basis it can affect your life adversely.

So what is insomnia? Insomnia has been defined as “sleep problems characterized by difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night, or waking up earlier than desired.” Some of the more common effects of insomnia are getting up in the morning in a haze or experiencing ongoing drowsiness as the day progresses. An easy way to look at insomnia is simply the inability to get enough high-quality sleep.

Sleep acts as a nightly tune up for your brain. Studies have shown that Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep positively affect your mood during the day. When you sleep the parts of the brain that control your emotions, decision-making processes, and social interactions slow down dramatically. This allows your brains to recover from the previous day’s activities and improve your performance when you’re awake.

Have you ever tried to really concentrate when you’re tired and groggy? I find that I don’t concentrate well when I haven’t slept well. Scientists have suggested that our brains, or more specifically our brain’s neurons, repair themselves during sleep. Sleep deprived neurons get sluggish and don’t fire properly. When this happens your nervous system doesn’t work as it should and your concentration is affected. You’ve probably experienced this on a long drive or when trying to study late at night.

You might find that your allergies actually worsen when you have difficulty sleeping. Studies have also shown that one of the effects of insomnia is that your immune system is weakened. This can result in your body becoming more susceptible to infections and disease.

Although when I was having difficulty sleeping my health wasn’t permanently affected, many people experience an increase risk of disorders such as major depression, anxiety disorder, and even drug and alcohol abuse as effects of insomnia. Additionally some studies have shown that the lack of sleep can cause a person to develop problems with their weight. Other studies have shown that sleeping disorders can even lead to a premature death.

When I wasn’t sleeping well I experienced trouble falling asleep as well as having a hard time staying asleep. I found that one of the effects of insomnia was it made me think fuzzy. I also had a hard time remembering things. My difficulty sleeping affected my ability to get my work done. If you have difficulty sleeping you might experience these types of symptoms too.

So to sum it up, if you have difficulty sleeping it can trigger problems at home, work or school. Other effects of insomnia include the slowing down of your reaction time which can results in accidents in your car, at home, and in the workplace. If you are having difficulty sleeping get help starting today before the effects of insomnia make a permanent impact on your life.
